Multiple Intelligences as a Tool for Defining a Cognitive Profile in Taekwondo

Abstract

The study of multiple intelligences has gained relevance in sports by promoting a comprehensive understanding of athletes' self-perceived skills. The aim of this study was to characterize and compare the predominant self-perceived multiple intelligences among taekwondo athletes from different competitive environments. A quantitative, cross-sectional, and descriptive-comparative study was conducted involving a sample of 30 athletes: 15 from the Ecuadorian National Team (high-performance level) and 15 from the Central University of Ecuador (university level). Data were collected using the Sports Multiple Intelligences Test and analyzed through descriptive statistics. The results showed that the intelligences with the highest frequency of predominance in the total sample were bodily-kinesthetic (86.7%), visual-spatial (80.0%), and logical-mathematical (66.7%). Descriptively, the high-performance group showed higher frequencies in bodily-kinesthetic, visual-spatial, and logical-mathematical intelligences, whereas university athletes highlighted bodily-kinesthetic, visual-spatial, and interpersonal intelligences. It is concluded that there are descriptive differences in the configuration of self-perceived intelligences according to the studied group. These descriptive trends suggest possible contextual variations that require further verification through future studies using inferential analysis and larger samples.
