Sleep quality is an important factor in the health of people with type 2 diabetes mellitus, given its potential impact on overall well-being and disease management. The objective of this study was to describe sleep quality in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus receiving primary care. A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted among 104 participants with a confirmed diagnosis, selected through convenience sampling. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Descriptive statistics were used, including frequencies, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. The results showed a high prevalence of poor sleep quality, with more than two-thirds of participants classified as poor sleepers and an average overall score above the established cutoff point. Abnormalities were identified in various components of sleep, as well as discrepancies between subjective perception and the instrument’s assessment. It was concluded that poor sleep quality is common in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus, highlighting the importance of integrating its assessment into clinical follow-up in primary care, particularly within nursing practice.
