Globally, individuals with Down syndrome demonstrate a lifelong dependence on their families for personal, social, and educational development due to a lack of training programs. This study aimed to analyze the needs, limitations, and psychoeducational strategies used by caregivers of young people with Down syndrome in the province of Santa Elena to inform the design of a proposal focused on strengthening personal and social autonomy. The study employed a pragmatic paradigm and a sequential explanatory mixed-methods approach, with a non-experimental, descriptive, cross-sectional design. A diagnostic survey was administered to 56 caregivers, and the results showed that 100% expressed a need for training on strategies; these results served as the basis for the design of the qualitative phase. The findings from the interviews, analyzed through thematic analysis in Atlas.ti, revealed that autonomy has achieved significant progress within the home, while remaining limited in the social and educational spheres. The study concludes that there is a gap in training, which supports the need to design psycho-pedagogical strategies aimed at caregivers, with this diagnosis serving as empirical support for future research.
