Service Learning as a method for the educational approach in vulnerable contexts in the subject of Social Pedagogy

Abstract

Starting in 2016, the subject Social Pedagogy was included in the curriculum of the Education Degrees, with the aim of students acquiring knowledge about basic areas of the subject, hence the possibility of integrating "Service Learning" arises. as a methodology with the objective of integrating the methodology into the subject for the detection of educational needs in vulnerable contexts. A qualitative and exploratory-descriptive study was carried out in two courses of Mathematics and Language and Literature. The students were trained in the methodology and carried out field work in different high schools, which allowed them to develop a project linked to citizen participation and social responsibility in 4th year high school students. The results of the field work showed the importance of academic training in identifying needs and offering solutions to complex realities, visualizing what they can achieve when they become teachers who are agents of change.
