Abstract

The aim of this study was to describe the assessment and intervention process and analyze the changes observed in the speech sound production of a five-year-old child in a Dominican school context. A descriptive clinical case study was conducted using a qualitative approach and pre- and post-intervention assessment. The assessment included family anamnesis, clinical observation, the Revised Phonetic-Phonological Assessment Protocol (PEFF-R), and the Phoneme Articulation Test (PAF). Initial findings identified phonetic and phonological difficulties mainly involving the /l/ and /d/ phonemes, characterized by substitutions and omissions, with no apparent orofacial alterations observed during the clinical assessment. An individualized intervention was subsequently implemented over seven weeks, with two 60-minute sessions per week. At the end of the process, the available records described more accurate productions of the /l/ phoneme, while some difficulties with /d/ persisted. Due to the absence of complete quantitative records and the single-case design, the observed changes were interpreted descriptively and cannot be attributed exclusively to the intervention. This study documents the assessment and intervention process in a Dominican school context and provides preliminary background for future research on the assessment and intervention of speech sound difficulties in young children within diverse educational and clinical practice settings.
