Effects of exercise and water therapy for treating an ankle sprain in the third trimester of pregnancy

The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a combined package of physical exercise and contrast baths (cryotherapy and thermotherapy) on quality of life and physical condition in a pregnant woman after a grade I sprain of the left ankle. The participant in this study is an 18-year-old woman, 30 weeks pregnant (first-time), married, with secondary education and sedentary. The 5-week intervention plan consisted of a variety of strength, endurance, proprioception and gait re-education exercises plus water therapy aimed at reducing swelling, pain and joint mobility. The results show reduction in swelling of the injured ankle (18%), decrease in localized pain (78%) and radiated pain (87%), at the same time, improvements in dimensions of quality of life, functional capacity and physical condition (180% increase in leg strength and 59% increase in mobility). It can be concluded, that this combined plan, based on exercise and water therapy, generated important effects on the functional capacity, physical condition and quality of life of the participant in this study.
