Use of platelet-rich plasma and dexmedetomidine in the treatment of osteoarthritis at the Anacaona Medical Center, San Juan de la Maguana, Dominican Republic, July-December 2023

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease that affects the cartilage, extracellular matrix and subchondral bone, affecting 15% of people over 60 years of age and being more common than rheumatoid arthritis. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a therapeutic option that promotes cell regeneration and reduces articular cartilage degradation. Dexmedetomidine, an analgesic and sedative drug, is used in patients with difficult-to-control pain, acting on alpha-2 adrenergic receptors to relieve neuropathic pain. The aim of the study is to evaluate the usefulness of autologous PRP and dexmedetomidine in the treatment of osteoarthritis. A descriptive and prospective study was carried out at the Anacaona Medical Center, San Juan de la Maguana, between July and December 2023, with 65 patients with osteoarthritis. They were treated with PRP and dexmedetomidine (0.2 to 0.5 cc) intra-articularly. In the results, the mean age was 60.9 years, with female predominance (65.2%). Patients treated with PRP achieved more than 50% recovery in 80.7% of the cases. As conclusions, PRP together with dexmedetomidine are promising options as palliative treatment for osteoarthritis, with superior results to other preoperative options.
