This paper provides a conceptual analysis of education based on Freudian thought and the proposals of educational theorist Gert Biesta. It examines the Freudian conception of education as an impossible profession in relation to his framework on the drive renunciation demanded by culture. Following a contrast with Hobbesian theory and Roberto Esposito’s interpretation of it, this perspective is construed as a way of conceiving sociability based on restriction and renunciation. By contrasting this with models that prioritize mutuality as the foundation of the social sphere, the analysis shifts to the ideas of Biesta, for whom education is a risky event in which freedom is bound to intersubjectivity. This proposal allows for a reinterpretation of the impossibility of the educational act, not as a defect to be eliminated, but as a condition for an education open to freedom, alterity and unpredictability.
