Abstract

This research analyzed teacher training in physical-sports animation, lifeguarding and training at the Pedro Henríquez Ureña Polytechnic, San Juan de la Maguana, Dominican Republic. With a qualitative and exploratory approach, aspects related to lifeguarding, animation and recreational activities, essential in the teaching work, were approached. A semi-structured interview was used, validated by expert judgment with an index of 0.892, applied to 5 teachers out of a total of 21 who worked in the period 2023-2024. The analysis, carried out with ATLAS.Ti, defined three categories: (1) Lifesaving and lifeguarding, (2) Level of information on animation and lifeguarding, and (3) Physical-sports animation, training and recreational-sports development. The results revealed that teachers have gaps in knowledge and skills in these areas, but maintain a positive attitude towards training. It was concluded that educational reforms have not prioritized lifeguarding or animation in teacher training, evidencing the need for curricular adjustments. Although these decisions correspond to the educational authorities, teachers can propose improvements based on the perceived shortcomings, thus promoting a more comprehensive and relevant training in these key competencies.
