Abstract

Incorporating aquatic activities, such as swimming, within a comprehensive approach that encompasses physical, psychological, and psychomotor aspects may offer additional opportunities to promote mental health. The aim of this research was to learn about the broad benefits of swimming in preventing depression. A systematic review of bibliographic analysis was carried out by means of analytical tracking techniques and documentary quantification from various search engines: Google academic, Dialnet, Redalyc, Scielo, where a total of 143 documents were obtained, selecting the sample, and then continuing with the following coding: 1) Title of the article; 2) Name of the authors and year; 3) Objective; 4) Sample-Instruments; 5) Results. The results reported a gradual and sustained reduction of long-term depressive symptoms in those individuals who practiced swimming. The immediate improvement in mood, the reduction in long-term depressive symptoms and the neurobiological mechanisms involved support this claim. The available evidence suggests that swimming is a promising intervention for the prevention and management of depression. However, more rigorous studies are needed to establish clear evidence-based recommendations.
